Podcast 41 - "Don’t torture yourself. Turn away from brooding over the slights and shortcomings of your life and devote yourself to the limerick as I do. "
I think I am 5 years older than Garrison Keillor. My dad John (Jack) Mycue's father William Oliver Mycue was born In Minnesota and maybe that kind of thinking is natural to my early learning (though I had northwestern New York--Niagara Falls NY and northwest Pennsylvania Quakers and others.
At age 87, I have a few more years of life experience than GK. While I appreciate his constant efforts of late to convince us we all should be happy and cheerful over current life conditions and culture which I don't have to spell out, I would much prefer that he would cut the phony joy crap and get back to calling a spade a spade - a la H.L. Mencken who preceded him by a few years but had the same abilities to observe and offer insightful comments on the actual situation - many of which still apply to today.
Hey, Dave, I personally love the cheerful approach to life. Obviously bad shit is going down as we said back in the 60’s, but wailing and gnashing of teeth doesn’t solve the problems either. Let’s save democracy with common sense and smiles. Dr. Ruth has you outlived by quite a few years and she just published a new book—with a big grin on her face.
Hi Katherine: Thanks for your comments. I agree as a normal optimist (I was a pilot flying small to medium sized planes for 35 years and you do have to be an optimist as you might guess). However, I'm also a realist who thinks that problems don't solve themselves and need to be recognized not glossed over with a sappy, happy face. I think you get my point.
And prayers too, for which I fear our country needs many!
Thanks GK for your calming humor and insights!
This former White Plains, New Yorker now a Kansas girl, met you at the KansasStateFair plus you came to our Emanuel Lutheran Church.. we had a dinner for you.. and you blessed us with your presence! THANK YOU FOR CONTINUING TO BLESS US WITH YOUR THOUGHTS & LIMERICKS!
PS: I still haven’t learned how to “post” on my own Substack, but at lest I found out how to write “notes” and just published one on heart disease, wandering off-topic to mention my camping adventures and pondering what explains the differences in mortality statistics between Caucasians and northern American indigenous peoples.
Thank you for your voice and slice of City life for me. My doctors are over on York too but I haven’t been down there since Covid. Love the limericks.

Absolutely.
The accent in “concupiscence” is on the second syllable.
Key To Our Hearts
Mind is the best
time machine
where your ‘rush’
enables my ‘swoop’
and my rust remembers
your memory of me
treasure that remains
as long as we are
able to return for
as long as we remember
us you we live your/my
/our ever after thoughts
through our mind’s
clasp of armfuls of stars

Mr. Keillor was caught in a jam
Like sometimes I think that I am.
But instead of a walk,
I just heard him talk,
And my heart’s as happy as a clam.
(At high tide. )
—thanks!
Yep walking IS good for the heart!
And prayers too, for which I fear our country needs many!

I’m so pleased to listen to your observations once more! Few can paint a picture with words as well as you do.

"Where are we headed"? Easy one, because we are already there.
