Oh Funny Man, clearly your mind and your wit survived the surgery. So glad the jello brought you such great joy. Anyone who can meditate on jello after heart surgery is a very happy soul! Thank you for sharing your happiness so beautifully with the world. Get well soon.
Bless you! Eat whatever you can / want! I use a cane when I want, but keep the walker ready for the next round. Eat a little junk food now and then( Chilly fries, for me-all, that new plumbing needs lubrication. As for smaaat phones, they take great pictures.
It's my ancestral cane, inherited from my mother who lived to age 97, a year older than Elizabeth II who my mother admired. I may need to buy a fedora to go with it.
So glad you survived. This coming Halloween it will be 15 years since I donated a kidney to my husband. I guess it's hard enough going in for surgery when you're sick, but when you're perfectly healthy there's something else going on. Love, for sure. My husband passed away in January due to all kinds of problems -- Parkinson's, atrial fibrillation, nasty intestinal infection -- but the kidney soldiered on until the end. We lived in a state of gratitude for 14 years.
Grateful, smiling, hopeful and all that because you let us in on your mind and heart. THANK YOU. Hope your continued healing is fine and offers more of the foods that bring you delight! Ahh, Mac and cheese…who could be disappointed to find it on the plate? Be well, Garrison.
Oh boy, so grateful this rainy morning for moisture in the air and a delicious breeZe to be able to read your majestic words written with precision weaving together the mundane and profound that only you can do with GKM (garrison Keillor magic) because it is the small little things that are the most important. Steady as she goes. Blessings.
Years ago when a patient at Cleveland Clinic I discovered their food service was Stouffers whose headquarters was in Shaker Heights Ohio, and that my Mothers cousin was a dietician there. Stouffers Mac and cheese is still a favorite of mine from those Clinic days. Take care get better soon like 2 minutes from now!
This planet will always be habitable as long as there is mercy and gratitude, like a gentle rain that soaks the field after the battle. Thank you, Garrison. Rest up!
Thank you for sharing such great news. You were never alone during your surgery. You were in the shadow of The Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit, as well as your own Guardian Angel....no better friends to be with ;)
Thanking you for reminding me to be thankful for how fortunate I am, to be grateful for all I do have instead of lamenting what I do not; I am thankful for your wit and insight. I am thankful for your successful surgery and recovery.
So glad you are still with us, Garrison. I start my day with you every morning. And I’m still trying to stand on one foot with my eyes closed for ten seconds. Thanks for the heads up on that one.
Nigh born again you were, GK. That needed surgery took no time in your mind. Bingo! You were blanked out with no dreams whatsoever. No time passed. Well, it seemed so. But, of course, for the surgical team, it was a precise team exercise in heart-fixing and your doctor was both conductor and pianist, finding all the right chords. As he swooshed his keyboard, he and his team took a bow for their harmonic heart-fixing.
Then you awoke groggy, wondering where that right hook came from. But it didn't hurt. It was right on target though. Now, the hospital Food Team is trying to make it appetizing. Being the gentleman you are, you must applaud their efforts and eat! The Food Team is part of your Fixing-up Team. Eat your vegetable, too.

You are eloquent, wry and the model of a gentleman. Well done, GK. Bravo!

Hurrah for love. Somehow I thought you needed to be genetic kin to be a donor.
Nope. All you need is matching blood types, two healthy kidneys that work 50-50, and the assurance that nobody is twisting your arm.
Very glad you made it through everything OK. I have absolutely nothing to say on any other subject.

Thank you. Heading home Sunday and looking forward to a PHC show in DC on October 20.
Thank you for this. It hit close to home in a neighborly way.

Thanks for the recommendation. My beloved is not mac/cheese friendly but I shall check out the grocery freezer section.
Ohio is home to so many food companies.
Good gracious -- or gratefulness. Best to you.

Wonderful piece of writing. I too am grateful every morning, no matter how I feel. Thank you for doing what you do.
