Thank you, Garrison, for calming me right down. I see you’re coming to The Kate (named for another of my favorite people). If my social security check arrives, I might attend!
Your comment about using Artificial Tears made me spit out my coffee, it was so genuinely funny and droll. The mouthful of Java was easily cleaned and only added to my enjoyment over the remainder of your uniquely individual and inspiring form of observational humor. I’ve had the distinct pleasure of listening to (and attending an occasional live stage performance of) you since your earliest days hosting Prairie Home Companion. That’s some 50 years, my insightful friend which, I believe, permits me the small privilege of fantasizing how nice it would be having you sitting across from me in front of the fireplace after dinner, two big, easy chairs, engaged in fine conversation. Barring that ever happening my only request, should you be in a favorable mood to grant one, is that you never change.
I applaud you and will be passing this along to my still-suffering friends. My time is now spent focusing on the good and beautiful that humans have created, not on the chaos and suffering. I spend my money going to museums and concerts--last night a lute player, tomorrow afternoon Greek tragedy, next week the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. I like my nature cultivated by gardeners at botanic gardens and conservatories; my history and science preserved in sprawling buildings filled with families and curious people from around the world. There is Japanese poetry, Fred Astaire, and Jane Austen. I bought bigger pants to enjoy ice cream. Life is good in this moment for me. They can't steal my sanity or serenity.
Whoops. I clicked on "Liked" for my own comment to see what readers "liked." I had no intention of boosting the "Liked" responses to my post. Alas, I'm getting used to this interconnective scribal process slowly. But I have faith in redeeming myself.
They are a ‘Their, Them’ —really a triplet…and no gender noted, although most assume Jesus was a man, but a toga hides a lot…of course he had a wife, children, three, and loved his mother, a lot. Raised by his ‘Dad.’ Claimed to be a child of god, and noted we all are children of god too, if we act accordingly: love, care, work hard, be the good works, create heaven on Earth, 4.5 billion years old Earth.
I fully respect your current perspective and hope that, should I live to my 80s, I might attain a similar peaceful outlook. In the meantime I believe that, at a young 65, I am obligated to keep up the informed, good fight.
I promise, however that should I ever again be fortunate enough to share afternoon tea or any other repas with you, I will assiduously avoid all mention of politics. Especially for the next 46 months.
As a former resident, do you know where I can send my letter of apology to Denmark for actions made by elected officials that in no way reflect the essence of America.
Hi Tim, aghast UK citizen here (and brother of equally appalled 80 year old who took US citizenship to vote for Obama, and who plans to escape back to the UK asap). Anyway, you will find the answers you need here-
I strongly feel I should apologize to you and to the Danish people for the despicable way our newly elected government officials are acting toward you, a trusted ally and friend. You need to know Trump et al. are reflecting neither the opinions of the American people nor the essence of America. There is a Turkish saying that "if a clown moves into the palace, he does not become a prince; the palace becomes a circus." These are the circumstances in which we now exist.

I wish the UK were an option for us, but I fear we’d loose Midsomer Murder, Vera, and Where the Heart is re-runs 😁
A fine communication Tim. I’m sure it will be appreciated. Those of us here in Europe who are not aligned with the far right nor are fans of the “strongman” clowncar style of government are with you in spirit. Amongst the reports of chaos and lunacy I’m noting the beginnings of a fight back from various directions, not the least being from senior officers in the Pentagon. I wish you all success. PS keep enjoying our drama exports! 🙂
Command D…very useful, as are Google searches, when they bring up WikiPedia entries…I don’t have one, yet. I hear one is not supposed to write your own. At some point soon people will realize that they too can ‘delete’ stuff, like 99% of the executive orders, as they are written on TP and can be flushed (that handle is also a great delete tool) because, other than his inner circle, they have no actual power.
The courts will, slowly, decide to also delete with damages. And I love Pope Francis who deleted JD from being a Catholic…we have this strange version here in the US that claim to be something they don’t actually practice. I claim to be an NFL QB, Little JD claims to be religious. There is no evidence of either being true, really truly! Delete, switch, grab a beer….
I love this so much. Thank you. — I took the University of Minnesota class you taught right after you did the movie with Meryl Streep and you were writing a bit about Dick Cheney shooting his friend in the face while duck hunting. Good times!!
I always say that, If I had a dollar for everyone or organization who has asked me for money in just the past ten years, I would be outside the grocery stores and shaking an ancient styrofoam cup in everyone's face begging for spare change. But I am still reasonably solvent because I have learned (on my own) the Art of Deletion. It relieves some of my guilt to know that others have mastered it, too.
I've taken to telling the dems that asking for money is not leadership.
thanks for this reminder that we don't have to read about every injustice in the world. as long as we remain aware that we might be called on someday to fight these.
I especially liked your reminder that if we gave to everyone who asks, we ourselves would be living in a cardboard box and asking for money.
Your voice calms me. I listen intently. You can tell the truth of the matter without screaming. You make sense when you speak. You remind us about what us real, what is important and how to enjoy some good part of our lives even in upheaval. The comment about the fascination of the working class with billionaire political leaders is something I have pondered for years.......it makes me think of the proverbial donkey trying to reach the carrot. Hope you keep writing and speaking and enjoy your travels. Thank you Garrison for another great post.👏👏👏
Thank you Garrison. Bless you and your absolutely unique voice♥️

But they will try....
“Bigger pants!” Of course! 🤗
I recall this bromide from my early adulthood: "If you want to make God laugh, tell Him* your plans."

Didn’t know how to reach you, to let you know MAC passed away last spring. Am missing your writings. Where can I find your articles now?

With best wishes for a swift return to sanity for your fine but currently badly misdirected country
Thanks Peter! Done! Here’s what I wrote…

OMG! You don’t think he’ll put tariffs on them too, do you? 😱

My plan for the next 4 is…we decided to leave our Halloween decorations up. We plan to take them down in four years, when Halloween is over.
I love this so much. Thank you. — I took the University of Minnesota class you taught right after you did the movie with Meryl Streep and you were writing a bit about Dick Cheney shooting his friend in the face while duck hunting. Good times!!
As James Taylor sings, "The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time." That's some good advice, right there.

Yes. Calm is the approach I most need to experiment with now.
