"...like watching a Hippo climb a tree..." And so many more good lines to boot! Nice to see you back in such rare form. Hopefully it means that your surgery did you good.
You must be feeling better. You are politically ranting again at our country's politic quagmire or swamp. It good to see your fire burning brightly. Eighty years old and you can't hold back on commenting on the general dismay of American Politics. "I think the patient is going to survive" is what I'm thinking. Good work, carry on.
Thank you, good sir! Everything said and done, my father would have loved to watch Life of Brian with me after his own funeral today. What would life be after all without Biggus Dickus and Notius Maximus after all! It's raining cats and dogs here in Slovenia.
You are a good man, GK. I’ve followed your work for many years, having considered you one of the finest writers of our time. And I’ve got to say that you’ve always done your best work when you sidestep politics. The anti-Trump vitriol is tiresome shit at this point. It’s late in the game for both of us. We’re both as old as the hills and not about to change the way we view things. Just the same, I thought I’d let you know. Best to you always.
No, Mike...it's not tiresome shit. As long as Trump is in the game, we need to stay in the game. And, for the sake of our American Democracy, we need to win it. Mr. Keillor's words help stay the course.
Thanks, GK. Not a Trumper. Simply wasn’t keen on the democrat alternative in 2016. Frankly, as a collective, both dems and republicans have proven themselves utterly worthless. America’s in a state of disrepair. We’re breaking. Perhaps it’s best we set aside our disdain for all things DT if we’re ever to fix it.
Okay, you're not a Trumper, but you don't mind him abusing the FBI for coming to recover top-secret government documents. The shamelessness of the man is breath-taking. There's been nobody remotely like him in our history. George W. Bush would agree with that, so (in a private moment) would McConnell, and George H.W. and McCain and Eisenhower and others would be incredulous.
Trump is a rube and, yes, as unpresidential as they come. That said, I trust the man far more than I do the FBI, a corrupt outfit from inception. In matters of trust, decency, fairness, and objectivity, the bureau’s hierarchy has been missing in action from the get go. Previous presidents and other high level public servants have pilfered and/or destroyed documents after their stints in office, all without the bureau raising a brow. What a sham. Yep, Trump can be a silly rube but he’ll be gone soon enough. Not so the FBI and power brokers that keep it afloat.
Perhaps not. The bureau answers to a DoJ that has gone off the rails. It’d be marvelous if Garland spent as much time targeting the wealthy pedos associated with Epstein as he does with targeting Melania’s underwear and DT’s autographed photo of Kim Jung-un.
Aha. So it's the FBI at fault, corrupt from its inception. Glad you came right out with that, now I know where you're coming from. Trump is no rube. Anyone who can raise $250 million from the rubes in order to discover fraud that doesn't exist so he doesn't bother looking for it is not a rube. As for being "unpresidential" this is not about manners. This is about right and wrong. But we're simply in separate solar systems. Have a good weekend.
"nobody remotely like him in our history..." That could be because, over the years, our history has been sanitized.
Teddy Roosevelt seems to have had an enormous ego, too. And there were times when TR also played by the "rules of his own convenience." I took a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon once. Up front, I caught a private conversation between the pilot and his friend. "You see that animal trail there, ten yards or so below the rim? Back in TR's day, when he was President, he had a hunting cabin built there on the side of the trail - it was a perk of "Executive Privilege." He'd sit out there on the porch and "hunt" the game that passed by his doorstep. Those bucks with the "trophy antlers" were totally trapped, they had nowhere to escape. How's that for "sportsmanship?" I see some parallels there.
Like I said in the beginning, you are a good man, GK. Thanks for the exchanges, my pleasure indeed. You have a good weekend, too. Happy to know you’re on the mend. God bless America ...
I've been interrupting my wife with quotes from this one. Very funny. When I worked for a living and people asked what I did, I'd tell them I worked with the humor impaired. Great to see Garrison using the term too.
Just spent three days at the American Hospital in Paris ( some vacation )where bilingual nurses and docs brought me out of Afib. While lying in bed being challenged to let go and trust I read your article on letting go in in your hospital room. Your humor brought me back to my essential nature. Thank you for sharing.
Just the right post as the season moved toward autumn. Shorter days, but sharper wit. Looking forward to the slice of your saber at the Anthem next month.
I truly loved your post today, Garrison, but I believe that President Biden doesn’t want to stoop to “grade school level” nastiness. He thinks we’ve had enough immaturity for these many years with the previous orange man and doesn’t want to continue it. The orange one is a school yard bully with a grade school mentality and “who immatures as he ages”. Biden doesn’t want to stoop to this level.
And haven’t we seen enough bullying everywhere from schools to politics? Let’s me civilized and act like adults.
Years of observation have led me to conclude that the Orange Menace's intellectual and emotional development both ceased abruptly at about the age of eight. Something traumatic must have happened to him then; terrible for the boy, and subsequently for the country.
The previous guy’s own mother is quoted (yes, I have a newspaper picture with the caption) saying “Yes, he’s an idiot with zero common sense and no social skills, but he IS my son. I just hope he never gets into politics. He’d be a disaster.” Mary Anne Trump

Wonderful piece.
I love the imagery of a hippo climbing a tree!
GREAT post!! i'm sharing! xx's

GK: too bad you no longer write for the Washington Post.
I needed a good laugh on the day of my father's funeral.
Nonetheless, my condolences. It's hard to lose a father, mysterious though fathers may be.
Thank you, good sir! Everything said and done, my father would have loved to watch Life of Brian with me after his own funeral today. What would life be after all without Biggus Dickus and Notius Maximus after all! It's raining cats and dogs here in Slovenia.
Don't stop!
I haven't had this much fun since the alligator ate its governor.

Ian, my name is Mick.
Agreed. What's tiresome is Trump himself and his MAGAs.
Ian’s better half I suspect. Quite startling you two agree. Please note there is medication available.
We're not related, other than sharing the same surname, by chance. Speaking of names, I apologize for getting yours wrong, Mick.
You’re a gentleman, good sir.
I also agree, despite not being married to Ian.
Dana, that’s lovely to know.
I agree with Ian & Sandi! We're not related, either.
Looks like you’ve found the right place. Enjoy.
Always happy to have Trumpers in the readership and I'm n ot surprised that you're tired of reading about him.

Misplaced lack of trust in the FBI.

Correction on my fact above: 100 million, not 250. Sorry for the mistake.
I wasn’t gonna hold you to it, GK. Get some rest.
What the others all said, double. Thank you!
Love this one! Thanks, Garrison. We need more zapping zingers--or zinging zappers--our current scene has gone beyond comedy.

Oh my, great fun, this! I had vowed never to read another word about DJT but this morning's good laugh restored my soul. Good for my breathing indeed!
There's art in a properly written This was artful, and funny.
