As a senior citizen myself, I feel that the primary purpose for keeping me on this earth is to contribute something to the present and future of my grandkids, their peers and cohorts of the future. Or at least to minimize the burdens placed on them by my continued existence.

" simple honesty in pplitics" L 0 L. Surely you jest. There is no place foran honest person in politics. No way for such an individual to be elected.

"We’ve got a great country, people, let’s be worthy of it." says Mr. Keillor. We've left the next generation in a debt unpayable. We do have folks who could work and reach out to others in much greater need, and drugs isn't the answer.. Many choose the government dole instead.

In return, politicians buy more votes, and keep the debt spinning. We do have ambitious kids moving forward, but not as fast as the debt rolls backward. Some day we will be bought out by a foreign conglomerate and the dole will disappear. No one will be able to do the square root any more. until a few bright monks find an answer. The the world can start over again and a new novel of "Canticle for Leibowitz" will be chanted. Cleansed we will be and start over again.

Like you, I've a grand-daughter in college much like an abbey where teams work hard to solve cleansing aerodynamic square roots. That's our only hope. It's not about some of us pols. It's about all of us.

An elder care congress with an alarming mix of wing-nuts. It surely is kind of scary and it surely is up to the voters to change it.

You are sounding political, Garrison....and I love it.

Humor with a dash of seasoned political salt, with a dash of the sage wisdom of the ages, and a strong pinch of brightly colored leaves and blustering snow blown by blustery fall winds and stinging wintery blows from Bully Boreas makes for fortifying sustenance in these times of famine.

That is a wonderful sentence. 😊

Thank you, Jeannine. My RN wife has diagnosed me with a bad case of logorrhea siting such symptomatic sentences as she rolls her eyes. I am glad to realize that some recognize my Dickensian potential. Till then , I‘ll continue hoisting the hod for my brick-laying buddies.

As a retired parent I couldn't believe the court had the guts to do the right thing. I wish all politicans had to assert publicly that I certify this bill will benefit all people AND those not born or too young to vote. And as special note, there was nothing wrong with a young adolescent enjoying (veni) a good "whooshi"!

I was happy to be a Montanan the day that news came out. Those are some brave kids, standing up for us all. Great column as usual!

The idea of free mental healthcare for all is a beautiful pipe dream, unfortunately. Out here in the boonies, it is almost impossible to find psychiatrists who are accepting new patients, even if one is willing to pay out of pocket - there simply aren't enough to go around! My primary care doctor has had to take over my psych med prescriptions, something she's not 100% comfortable doing, but something she's told me she's ended up having to do for several of her patients. She's doing the best she can to help her patients. She may not be a board certified head shrinker, but she knows her stuff. 😊

Mr. Keillor, you may be old, but you're definitely not in the way. Your advocacy for helping the younger generation is inspiring - keep talking, we're listening! 🎈

By the way, my doctor is a nice, smart, young woman in her thirties - she's younger than any of my children, but she's a great doctor and an essential member of our community. We need more like her.

Love your writing and column. Check out Keb Mo's song, "Louder." Same idea--it's all about the kids. And if there is any way to wrest money from the plutocrats' "soft, manicured hands" and power from states thinly populated by "make-believe" cowboys other than by voting Blue, I'd like to hear it.

Rarely stated, but I agree and uplifted by the stance expressed:

" I admit that I’m leaning toward higher taxation, just because there’s so much treasure in so few soft manicured hands. Rob the bloated and revive the bony."

Paying taxes is a shared responsibility of citizenship. Those who do not pay, who spend time and money figuring out ways to avoid paying, who do all kinds of contortions, shenanigans, trickstering, gaming and outright crime to avoid paying should be identified as haters of America and lovers of themselves and only themselves. They use the roads, airports, water, and all other graces of being an American citizen but they want others to pay for it, to provide it to them. They are parasites, no matter how rich they are. They are as lamprey eels are to the wild salmon; they are ticks on the body politic.

Pay up. Be a mensch. Be a citizen. Be a good scout. Be an American patriot (in the REAL sense, not in the revolting mis-use of those traitors waving their Con-man-federate flags and thug-army banners.) Pay your taxes and be grateful for the simple un-earned blessing of getting to live here.

"Ticks on the body politic" is the best insult I've heard on a long time - thank you!

You just described the President who has used tax laws to avoid paying millions into social security while he rails about the rich not paying their fair share. He takes all of his book royalties into shell companies vs taking it personally the shell companies pay zero social security tax on income vs the individual. Be interesting to know if Mr Keillor employs the same tax avoidance technique while claiming he wants to pay more.
