GK,

You have really turned me on to writing limericks. They’re quick, they have a pleasing cadence, and can be devilishly clever.

Back when we were young lads,

Rare finds were those magazines of dad’s,

Of the dirty variety,

Hidden from decent society,

That we swore we just gleaned for the ads.

Or...

If you worshipped the last President we had,

People will think you’ve gone stark-raving mad,

And taken leave of your senses,

And dropped any pretenses,

To critical thinking, just sad.

Thanks for a great show last Friday at the Anthem. Loved the variety. An opera singer, a poet, beautiful duets, a string quartet, comedy bits and more. Maybe a magician next time?

"I’m assuming your line about “disloyalty to the basic tenets of democracy” is a failed joke."

Zounds what a grand and all-purpose riposte!

I wonder is it original? One for the Dictionary of Quotations.

I love the 26-year-old writer’s comments and questions; very sensitive and astute. Reminds me of myself 15 years ago as a young writer just getting published. The question/criticism about voting republican and not supporting democracy makes me sad. Can’t this person understand that posing a question like that, as a weapon, IS part of the problem? When did we lose the ability to be genuinely open and curious about others’ views? When did we get so rabidly tribal? Radicalism and judgment get us nowhere, on either side. The lack of empathy for each other has become astounding.

At the Washington show, I tried to make the point by telling stories about two Republicans I admire, Harry Blackmun and Alan Simpson, both funny. A privilege to have met them.

GK,

We have to put our dog down. I found a Groupon for a cremation service, " buy one get one." I was wondering if you could solicit your audience? It would be a shame not to take advantage of 50% off.

Thanks.

Mr. Keillor

I once noted your admiration for the U's Prof. Mulford Q. Sibley and that you wear red shoes and socks to honor him. Did you take a course from him?

I neverr did. He taught political science and I wasn't tempted in that direction. But he was a dear iconoclast, a pacifist socialist in our midst, and he was very respectful of students who disagreed with him, and it was good for them, folks who'd go on as conservatives but with a sense of living in a larger world.

I enrolled as a U grad student to major in journalism from the unenlightened gloom of Faubus Arkansas. Prof. Gerald recommended that I take a course from Sibley. At the first class he wore a red tie and announced that he was a socialist. Perhaps most class members knew that already because I remember no groans. I worked hard and made an A. I'm ever grateful for the thinking challenges he gave me.

Thank goodness for Nick's asking for your video of the hymn sing! I have just cried through the entire segment and loved your leadership and fine harmonizing voice. Isn't it wonderful that there are still many people who remember and are proud to and enjoy singing those unsurpassed old hymns and patriotic songs? THANK YOU, GARRISON! Lolo Kable, Staunton, Va.
