It is amazing how many decades later we remember an unexpected compliment, and in the sense of actually hearing it, down to the room and the time of day. I really enjoyed yours too.

Wonderful story to read of the story you read. I doubt you had that baritone tone in your voice in your early school. But you sure have it now. Timbre means a lot, but well-read takes us a long way.

Dear Mr. Keillor

I was blessed to be at your wonderful show at the Flynn, in Burlington Saturday night. I had been listening to PHC since the late 70’s sans your sojourn in Europe. It was part of m ritual for writing my sermons. I’m a UNITED Methodist retired pastor (76), one of those still gently kicking.

You were my birthday present from my wife. We’d seen you before in Burlington with your stand up, but not a β€œbroadcast” with the whole gang since years go in Town Hall. Being somewhat mobility compromised I don’t get around much anymore. It was the most joyful evening I’ve had in man years. I laughed from my aisle seat in the orchestra until I cried. So thanks. I’m also glad for my sub stack subscription.

What I wanted to ask is whether the beautiful, meditative β€˜News’ you broadcast of the Lake Wobegone ice fisherman in their hut so many years ago exits in any form. I’d love to hear/read it again. It is one of my all-time favorite stories. Just in case you see this, I am Rev. Stephen Goldstein at stepgold@msn.com.

You can buy a set of CDs of the "News from Lake Wobegon" monologues from 1980 to 1986 on the APHC website. Maybe the one you remember is among them.

A little praise can go a long way, especially for a kid. Same for criticism, alas.

Unfortunately the criticisms and ridicule are often more memorable than the praise.

Oh, that story of your first grade teacher using such a wise and kind method of helping you build up your confidence and reading skill never fails to bring a big lump to my throat. Just a few words, good and bad, have such power to make or break someone. We should all try to remember that.

Can anyone tell me the best way to "Post to the Host"?

Last night I had the pleasure of being in the audience at The Egyptian in Boise. My goodness, you had us in stitches so many times! Seriously, though, I have a question that came to me while listening to the News. For decades, you told the Lake Wobegon stories as an omniscient observer. In the past year or three, however, you seem to have become a member of the Lake Wobegon community, still omniscient, but also a participant. . I'd be interested to know your thoughts on this transition, or if I'm completely off base.
