Well Garrison, I wake at 2:00AM and the mind is whirling with great thought, as I hear it. Yes, I'm listening very intently and often more than not I will act on one of the thoughts that very day. Take yesterday for example. Our son was contemplating fixing an area at the end of his driveway with blacktop patch material. Long story short, it's finished and guess who did it yesterday afternoon. It took a little more than a 50lb bag of blacktop mix and a bit more than an hour of my time. It's all documented if you care to see, "Rich Rader" on Facebook. I digress. Your note of today is out of this world amazing for me due to its relevance to my daily thinking. The lying that has become the norm in our society is driving me nuts, not crazy, just nuts. Today is my eighty second birthday and by all accounts I'm going to be around here, alive, for some time to come. Thanks, Garrison, for your writings. They keep me less nuts. RRoeder

There is a third, not to be overlooked, reason to lie: fear.

And is that FEAR "ingrained", or is it related to prior experience with similar folks or situations? When I'm discussing my current immigrant acquaintance, the fears in his background are largely unknown to me. The question of lying can be a delicate issue sometimes.

We had a teacher once who would literally smack one particular student on the side of his head if he "lied." I guess he was "fearless" - he kept getting hit for the whole school year.

Mr. K, perhaps it makes better sense to lean back and finish your dreams for a couple hours. Your thoughts will be transmogrified with virtually no effort on your part. Plus you get more rest. And in our 80's, rest is a good thing. When you wake, out-pop some of your finiest, no matter how whimsical. I went back dreaming at 4AM, and sure enough I solved a problem. Now I can no longer remember what it was, but it did give me great peace at 6AM. Hey, you might try it. It works for me, and it may for you....Tom

Tom, how do you know at what time Mr. K goes to sleep?

SHORT THE APPLE WATCH AND ELECTRO LEADS TO ONE'S WE DON'T KNOW WHEN ANYONE GOES TO SLEP. AND THERE ARE MANY LEVELS OF SLEEP, ABOUT WHICH YOU HAVE NOT ASKED. DISTEMPER AND HI-SPICES CAN MAKE YOU WISH YOU HADN'T.

I COULD NOT FIND HIS "GONE-TO-SLEEP" REFERENCE. I DON'T KNOW IF GK LOOKS AT SUCH ISSUES OR EVEN WANTS TO RESPOND. HE'S THE BUSIEST OCTOGEN I'VE EVER READ. BUT, THAT SAID, IT'S A GOOD QUESTION. I'M GUESSING HIS BEING BROUGHT UP NEAR LAKE WOE-BE-GONE, AND SUCH, WENT TO SLEEP AS A YOUNG MAN SHOULD. CHEERS!

Note to Tom: please lose the all-caps. All-caps = shouting on-line. Thank, and don't take offense.

AH, GLENN, NO OFFENSE! AND HOW DID THAT YELLING EVER GET CERTIFIED? I DO IT BECAUSE IT’S EASIER FOR MY INDEX FINGER. MOVE ON I MUST!

Carl Jung would be so darn proud of you. Maybe the G.K. Red Book is the proper sequel to "Cheerfulness."

If someone is charged with a crime, they deserve a "speedy trial" When was the last time you had a traffic ticket and only had the requested trial two (three?) years later?

Yes, I made it over the wall to pick the fruit you enjoy on your cereal in the blazing sun for practically nothing, so you do all of it for yourself and watch the economy shift.

Tess Clayton, are you saying that if we all who don't work in work done by migrant farm workers did that work we would insist that those who

do are paid a living wage?

Yes sir. John 16:13 via your writing.

O.K. I will go to Scotland in the spring. How about adding Ireland and Wales? Get Rich and Pat and maybe the G. sisters from New York. We can all get on the same cruise, just like old times.😀🥲🛳

My bladder fills by 4 AM and I'm up, then lying there unable to stop thinking about whatever it is I'm doing with near manic intensity that week: design challenges with furniture I'm building, or phrasing a letter to the editor, or escaping a plot corner I've painted myself into--it doesn't matter. Four AM is delicious, but this morning I did manage to get back to sleep and found myself in a large building in a hurry to get to where the dinner was to be held, so flew. My flying dreams are as often inside large buildings as outdoors, and the architecture, tight passages and large halls, is always interesting. Gravity bound onlookers seem to take it in stride, and I reawaken, bladder refilled, but happy and ready for breakfast.

Thank you for the good ideas, Mr. Keillor.

But the only thing gelatinous around here is the Ludafisk buried in the sand down by the beach. (Just in case the refrigerator breaks down, ya know?)

(Did you hear the one about Olie and Lina? "Hear it!" you say, "I wrote the damn joke!"

What I said was completely off base. I was half asleep when I posted it. I wish I could repost to apologize. I might be able to tomorrow.

Did you write this at 4 a.m.? Just kidding. Take care.

I often wake at 4 a.m., but my thoughts are about a trip to the bathroom. My best thoughts come in the morning afer a cup of coffee when I arrive at our store. At 91, I enjoy each new day with great anticipation. I am a poet, and I often write a new poem in the morning and email it out to friends and relatives. I take note of Garrison's writings and sometimes forward them to those who I know have similar views. I have sent them ,on coccasion, to someone who needs to be shuck up a bit. I spent 50 years in the choir at a Lutheran church. 2nd base. I give ,myself two more years. of life. If am live and kicking then, I will give myself two more. I will let you know if this comes to past.
