That’s family isn’t it! Your father sitting with Don and you all despite the differences about the game, the soaking up of what it means to be together, the awareness of individuality within and without the clan. That’s how we learn to appreciate and tolerate, to love and live together.

I think the Trump-lover below is not a real person, or is missing some marbles. My aunts and uncles, and grandmother (who lived next door) were different from Garrison's, but the piece still stirs up memories of long-ago dinners and all the voices and laughter, stories, and good food. And the long prayer, with its thanks, admonishment, and synchronizing of dinner.

I had always liked "Now Thank We All Our God." I went to a benefit to save "our organ" In a small town in Vermont. The organ, an Estey , was fine but the roof above it was starting to leak. A world class violinist who happened to retire in Orwell, Vermont, was the host. When it came to this hymn, announced for audience participation, he gave a kind of introduction. It was written by Martin Rickart from his study as he looked out over 500 or so freshly dug graves, the result of a recent plague and one of them holding his wife. I've never been part of a congregation that sang so powerfully and with such purpose.

Thank you Mr. Keillor for sharing your memories. They take me back too. You have every right to express your view about the leadership or lack thereof from the US president and team. Please ignore the haters…some of them are just bots and many can’t bring themselves to believe they’ve been massively lied to.

Your voice transports me back to when our country was a gentler, empathetic, giving nation. All I can gather around me to remind me of that is comforting and much needed. Thank you.

Mr. Keillor, hello,

Your nostalgic family shared experience was ever so heart warming. Why did you have to end this with a very subjective and derogatory comment about our leader, Mr. T. Some of us who understand his devote love for his country and its citizens will support all he has achieved in his first 100 days as remarkable proof that he is thus far the greatest president in our country's history. Those who follow the propoganda of desperate deep staters may want to alter their news sources and live in the now. LH

Please consider the following "very subjective and derogatory comments" about our leader, Mr. T. who in his first 100 days: gutted entire departments of the federal government. He defied the federal judiciary. He lifted regulations across industries. He fired, forced the resignations of, or eliminated the jobs of tens of thousands of federal employees. He hobbled scientific research. He all but criminalized immigration. He denounced the arts. He abandoned the federal government’s commitment to public education. His minions sent an innocent man to prison in El Salvador and joked about the court order to bring him back. He revoked civil rights, deriding the goals of racial equality, gender equality, L. G. B.T. Q. equality. He made enemies of American allies. He punished his adversaries and delighted in their suffering. After spectacularly failing to manage "Trump University," he tried to bring legitimate universities to heel. He bent law firms to his will. He instituted tariffs and toppled markets. He lifted tariffs and toppled markets. Sorry to abbreviate "all he has achieved in his first 100 days as remarkable proof that he is thus far the greatest president in our country's history."

It's sad to see a Substack subscriber extracting one line from a short essay and using this platform to get their lemming-laden political rocks off.

Garrison, how does it feel to be relegated to a lowly podcast after being a great radio star? Is it a comedown, or a relief? Are you glad you won't get downsized by the right trying to gut public radio? I miss the Saturday night specials we used to love!

Public radio subsidized by our government must be neutral and non biased. What NPR is broadcasting is nausiating the the conservatived faction. You like it, you support it, not the government. LH

This is beautiful . It makes me wish for thanksgivings that we did not have as we were growing up. It warms the heart to hear what it was like with family. I do appreciate your comments about our current whitehouse resident and its the plain truth, sad but true. Tell it like it is Garrison. We know it. You

We moved to Wisconsin in 1970, when I was 10. My father was an avid Packer fan, after being raised in the Midwest. It was the beginning of a terrible losing streak for the Pack! I recall many Sundays of him yelling at the TV. Lol. He really wanted them to win. It is probably why I don’t care all that much about professional sports. Plus, I moved to Dallas in the early 80’s. Monday mornings at the office was all about how the Cowboys sucked on Sunday.
