Podcast 58 - "And in the course of doing these shows I feel a profound mystery: it’s much more fun being an old has-been than it was to be a big success."
GK can get pretty adamant talking politics, but I can't help but agree 💯! Now if he could quiet boo birds and make them listen to the people who make the final decision in this country....
I'm pretty sure today's Republicans are not the same as those Republicans of your memory. I might be wrong having never met those; but these, at least those who claim to carry the banner are not worthy of respect.
I’ll be there in eight years to sing with you before and after your street corner preachings. You’ll know I’m there when you hear my tambourine being played badly! https://youtu.be/NSQXP8M7Hss?si=xd5BsFEoognuySvn
Garrison: We are both old now, and your musings help me uplift my point of view, which tends toward the pessimistic. I met you at the Nashville book festival 25 years ago and you had been in line for hours and still made me feel you had all the time in the world for me. I have listened to you since the 1980s, and I remember when my public radio station at Utah State University had a farewell party for you when you went to Denmark. I am glad you came back and are still with us. I won a limerick contest in the 1980s and realized you can't write just one. They finally wore off with me, but yours got better and better. I played banjo with a "girls" band for 10 years, and that was also uplifting, with some overlap, such as "Turn Your Radio On." Thanks for all you do, and have done.
So nice to hear you on Substack ... yes, the publishing and delivery world for music, books, and thoughtful writing has changed. Happy to see you here and glad to know about one of your new delivery methods. Kudos, long may you wave!
Where were you REALLY, Garrison? Not South Carolina. No South Carolina waitress EVER said "darling." She said "darlin". As a matter of fact, no word at all has a final "g".
There is balm on Saturday morning, after the Friday shootout ( I mean on your site, not PA). You give me reason to live till 90. I'll be happy to join you in Greenville on that corner. I'll add my tenor-baritone to your rambling basso. "Nearer My God To Thee" would be quite appropriate, like on the Titanic.
You are a preacher, only like the best of them you draw your sermon from personal experience.
“My uncles tended Republican, believing in personal responsibility and fiscal reality…” …and the party of Lincoln, Eisenhower and Reagan.
The spectacle last week in Milwaukee certainly does give a whole new meaning to the term RINO.
[i.e. “Republican In Name Only”]

In 1985 my priest (Episcopal) introduced me to your show, saying, "He's the best preacher of the gospel working today."

Amen, RC!
I love hearing your voice no matter where you are. Thank you for reading aloud.
I’ll be there, Brother Garrison.
