Sage advice Mr Keillor. Age does give one perspective, though it takes a Writer to put that into reflective & universal terms. Children literally are our future and warrant our recognition, care and attention and love. My days of direct input with my own children have long gone, perhaps rather more the other way these days, but I have hopes for the grandchildren to be and will be thankful if I can be present at that age of wonderment and be part of creating it!
I hope to see you in Kossars, the wonderful bagel maker whose new shop on 72nd and West End Ave should open in May. This way you can stroll along RSD. Of course, we miss Jimmy, Georgia, Carmelo and the crew who ran Pier 72, our famed and loved coffee shop that was on this corner for 40+ yrs. My daughter grew up on their chicken soup and my days of sitting at breakfast with my little one in a high chair are sweet memories. My daughter, now 23 and I have had a few magical trips and I am so grateful for those moments. I have learned that simple easy moments are the jewels. Let’s hope Kossars coffee is up to par. I will see you there! Have a beautiful day.
Man, the bagels in that picture look delicious. I’m a born and bred New Yorker now living in Virginia. We just don’t get bagels anywhere near as good here in the South. If I were walking down Columbus Avenue, that’s what I would be fixated on. A toasted Everything bagel with a smear of cream cheese! Best I can do this morning is Dunkin Donuts. Woe’s me!
Not every dad has transatlantic travel $ and the travel plan to go with it. Nor does a mom for her daughter. But there's a lot to lifelong remember on how to change the oil for the guys and make sweet caramel rolls for the girls. I do NOT suggest here that gender is critical, but it can help. Plus, it can often beat it than running for a foreign flight or buying a foreign trinket.
As for showing off and diving from the boat without any swimming skills, that's as dumb as a rock and the same direction in the lake.....down!
Love your kids in sharing ways and show them things. In the metropolis there are few dads to help out, if any kids and dads at all. That's another and sad story.
Do what Garrison does....Tell stories to all those he can....real or made up. Make wonder come in their eyes.. If you don't, they won't likely be able to pass it on either and being 80+ isn't worth a plugged nickel.
Oh, God, I love you!!! You have been 'lifting' me up for as long as I can remember (I'm 80 this October). So grateful to be walking this road with someone like you! xx's
Lovely essay on Columbus Avenue … great to see NY through your eyes. My poet uncle, Robert Lax, lived on Patmos for over 25 years. You may have seeen him as you zoomed by on your motorcycle!
One can't make time. Or wonder for that matter. If, however, one can slow one's self to witness it accelerated workings in the young, memories seems to provide the materials by which we are able to share in that creation which the Good Lord participated in his 6 wonder-filled days so long age. The 7th one is reserved for us to share in this work. Thank you, Garrison, for helping to point this out.
My wife and I visited there several years ago. It seemed to be monopolized by Greek Orthodox believers lined-up at a cave where the apostle John purportedly received the Revelation, filing through, lighting and methodically placing candles. Beautiful island. Sorry your romance didn't work out.
Good morning Garrison. You make this morning a moment of relaxation with these words of simple thought. I wish everyone could feel what I'm feeling now. All good things. Saturday evening after we returned from Catholic mass, we watched a very old Lawerence Welk show on PBS. It was one from the Bi-Centennial year. Last evening just before shutting down and going to bed I touched on a link of a performance of Andre Rieu from Bahrain. What amazing warm feelings we received from this concert. This morning while consuming your words brings a continuation of happiness for me.
When did you adopt the trendy but incorrect use of "couple" as an adjective, as in "couple bagels"? Surely you learned early in life that it's supposed to be "couple OF bagels"? And nothing has changed that would justify leaving out the "of."
Yes, but I'm older (88) and therefore wiser! By the way, your unfortunate trendiness aside, I enjoy your writing a lot and read everything I can get from you free. Your take on little kids this morning, for example, is delightful.
It's always such a pleasure, waking up to find a story from you! Thank you for your insight and wisdom! It's like a bit of sunshine, even when it's cloudy.

Dense Mr. Keillor,
Thank you for taking the time to be wonderful today.
Love,
Dawn

I will set my GPS for 72nd when I get back in May. I need the exercise.

Great story teller as always, stitching life together
Fabuloso!
I see what you did there. Four times. Thanks.

Enjoyed your musings as always, though surely the Pantheon is in Rome?
Mister Gettig,
Here is a wiki link to the Panthéon in Paris: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panthéon
Merci, Roger.

I loved his work. I wish I'd met him. I'm going to look up his work today.
Now I must have husband go to Panera's and get bagels. Best I can do!!

I enjoy your ruminations with increasing interest at 73.
You visited Patmos? Where John received the Revelation? Tell us more...
I went there for a month to try to repair a broken romance and instead she and I discovered that we didn't like each other much.

Got a good laugh here. Thanks!

Of course you're right but I'm still better looking than you and have more of what it takes.

I wonder if “a coupla bagels” would have satisfied your reader?
