The irony of the discussion about dogs and hearing aids is that the most important sense in a dog’s view of the world *by* *far* is smell. Nothing else comes close.

(There’s an excellent discussion of this topic --as well as much else-- in Ed Yong’s wonderful “An Immense World”.)

Think of this next time you see someone walking their dog and pulling the poor dog away when it tries to smell something the owner thinks is icky. Restricting a dog’s attempts to smell things is the same as taking a child out for a walk blindfolded.

Of course, but if I want/need to communicate with my dog - down, stay, come, drop it, no need to bark at the UPS driver, or whatever - we will have to use a sense other than smell.

I was a customer in my local supermarket. I noticed an elderly couple with a few things in their shopping cart behind me. I immediately exclaimed Go Ahead of Me. It was a small gesture. It paid dividends. The lady felt touched by my senseless act of kindness. It seems that respecting those who are older is an outdated beatitude.

I know Jesus would have admired it. Limericks are still born of a snappy old beat and the cleverness of leprechauns.

the phrase "senseless act of kindness" tickles me... as i tend to picture some brute who has lost their mind, & unintentionally and wantonly commits good deeds, much to their chagrin.

"i tried to trip her but instead i lost my senses, fell, and ended up holding the door open for her with my body

I’m only the vessel of my senseless actions. I know it seems sublime. I just like to do nice things for strangers.

i'm getting a sense finally for how unhinged the 1960s must have felt, like the fabric of reality is tearing at the seams.

the world is going nuts. i just wish it would also go soup, salad, entree, & dessert so we could have a whole crazy feast

Enclosed is my cc # for my limerick. I’m discouraged about politics, but not enough to claim the discount.

But I'd opt for sign language first - dogs learn very quickly!
