Very perspicacious-- and I hope that the latest bout of moral outrage is sustained, and leads to citizens holding their elected representatives accountable, from local sheriffs and judges to the state legislatures and the US Congress, up to Presidential candidates.
Great comments Garrison. This is one of your best columns. Thank you.
There are so many good things about America and about life. And a lot of good people in the world. But since the latest shooting I have been depressed about the human condition and about America.
You are right that the AR-15 was made for one purpose and that purpose was to kill as many people as quickly as possible. Not only does it kill. But it mutilates the people that it kills. They say that in these shootings, most of the people who are killed are unrecognizable. The authorities have to use DNA to accurately identify the bodies. Those who do survive have terrible wounds.
But that brings me to my concern about our fellow humans. There are guns companies and their owners who are in the business of making money by selling AR-15's to the general public. And I am told that many of them target young people through television and computer games.
And the NRA and politicians are making big bucks defending them.
There are many ways to make a living or to make money. Why does a person chose to make money selling death and destruction to young people? I just can't conceive of a person that low.
I am depressed that there are people who sell these guns and there are politicians who defend them. I am also sad that America puts up with it.
So beautifully written. I was brought to tears. I am reminded of the piece you wrote when John Kennedy Jr died. I believe it was published in Time Magazine. It had the same impact on me. Thank you for speaking so eloquently about what so many of us carry unspoken in our hearts.
You have clearly, succinctly, and without undue emotion, articulated beautifully what so many of us feel. However, the fact remains that no amount of logic and reason will ever convince the gun worshippers and fake patriots that owning assault weapons isn't a divine right protected by the Constitution. That they brazenly and proudly held the NRA convention in the same state, shortly after the massacre, says more about the wrong direction in which we're heading than anything I can think of right now.
One of the most meaningful essays you've ever written. Nothing more to say, except: Thank you.
A perfect commentary. It is beyond tragic that it had to be written and read.

Thanks for reading my mind
